Start here: flip the bag over before you flip a coin between “natural” and “synthetic.” That’s the whole method. What to actually do with the bag in your hand

Work through it in this order, every time:

  1. Read the ingredient form, not just the name. “Glucosamine” isn’t one thing — glucosamine hydrochloride and glucosamine sulfate behave differently, and the label should name which one you’re getting.
  2. Check for a stated dose per active ingredient, not a proprietary blend total. If a multi-ingredient product only discloses a combined milligram figure, you cannot judge whether any single ingredient is dosed high enough to do anything.
  3. Ask whether the company can show sourcing and testing documentation. Traceability back to a verified supplier is one of the things a National Animal Supplement Council audit is built to confirm — NASC states plainly that its Quality Seal has to be earned through a comprehensive third-party audit, not purchased, and that a side-by-side label read alone won’t tell you whether that supply chain and testing program actually exists behind the product.
  4. Match the ingredient form to the reason you’re giving it. A joint supplement built around a poorly bioavailable glucosamine salt at an underdosed level is not doing the job the front of the bag implies, regardless of whether the source ingredient started as whole food or lab-synthesized.

I separate structure/function support from treatment on purpose, and bioavailability is exactly where that line gets blurry for owners. A well-absorbed joint or skin supplement can support normal joint comfort or coat quality in an otherwise healthy dog — that’s a reasonable, evidence-bounded expectation for a supplement to carry. It is not a treatment for osteoarthritis, and a poorly absorbed version of the same ingredient, dosed too low, isn’t going to get you even that much. The form-and-dose question is really a proxy for a bigger one: is this product capable of doing what its front label implies, or is it mostly a well-marketed inert filler?

I think back to a twelve-year-old Labrador I saw in oncology follow-up — stable disease, decent quality of life, owner asking whether to add a “premium natural” supplement stack on top of the dog’s existing NSAID and gabapentin. We went through her current medication list first, because supplement-drug interactions matter more in an oncology patient than in a healthy young dog, and then we looked at what each new product actually claimed to deliver.
