Proprietary Blend Versus Fully Disclosed Ingredients on Dog Probiotic Labels

The bag was open on my exam table before the owner even sat down. A twelve-year-old Cavalier named Biscuit, 16 pounds, soft stool for three weeks, and a probiotic chew the owner had picked up because the packaging said “5 billion CFU proprietary probiotic blend.” She wanted to know if it was working. I flipped the bag over. Under “Ingredients” sat the words Probiotic Blend, followed by a single combined number, no strain names, no per-strain count, no guarantee at expiration. I couldn’t tell her whether Biscuit was getting a clinically relevant dose of anything, because the label didn’t say. That’s the moment this topic stops being a labeling technicality and starts being a real question about whether a product can do what its front panel implies.
What “proprietary blend” actually means on the back of the bag
A proprietary blend is a labeling shortcut. Go straight to the ingredient panel and look for three things: each strain named individually, a CFU count attached to each named strain rather than one combined total, and a guarantee stated through expiration rather than only “at time of manufacture.” If a label gives you all three, you can look up the strain and compare the dose to what’s in the literature. If it gives you a single blended number under “Probiotic Blend,” you’re being asked to trust the front-of-bag claim on faith.
None of this means proprietary-blend products don’t work — some almost certainly contain reasonable doses of useful organisms. The trouble is you can’t tell from the label, and neither can I, which means neither of us can weigh the product against the evidence before your dog is the one testing it.
