Is fisetin actually worth asking your vet about?

A twelve-year-old Lab mix — call her a patient of mine, 68 pounds, arthritic in both hips — came in for a recheck last winter, and her owner had a printout of a fisetin study folded in her coat pocket. She’d read that it might help “clean out old cells.” I get some version of that visit every few weeks now. The question underneath it is always the same: does this flavonoid actually do anything measurable in a dog’s body, and at what dose, before I hand a supplement to a senior patient with kidney values I’m already watching.

Fisetin is a plant flavonoid — found in strawberries, apples, and onions — that researchers classify as a senolytic, meaning it’s studied for its ability to selectively clear senescent (“zombie”) cells that accumulate with age and secrete inflammatory signals. That mechanism is genuinely interesting for a geriatric patient. It’s also not the same thing as a proven anti-aging treatment, and I want to keep those two ideas separate for you the way I keep them separate in the exam room.

What the dog data actually shows

The most relevant canine evidence is a randomized, controlled, six-month trial in dogs age 10 and older with mild to moderate cognitive impairment, published in Scientific Reports. It tested a combination supplement pairing a senolytic (including fisetin-family compounds) with an NAD+ precursor, not fisetin alone, across placebo, low-dose, and full-dose arms. Adverse events were tracked across all 70 enrolled dogs, and researchers reported that events “occurred equally across groups,” with most graded minimal, and none attributable to the active supplement. That’s a meaningfully different statement than “fisetin is proven safe and effective for dogs” — it’s a combination product, in a specific population, over a defined window.

I set that finding beside what conventional workups still tell me: a senior dog’s bloodwork, joint exam, and cognitive scoring matter more than any single ingredient claim. Meridian-style whole-patient thinking has a place in how I frame an aging dog’s overall picture, but it never replaces the panel of values sitting in front of me.

On the human side, fisetin’s safety data is more mature. A ClinicalTrials.gov protocol describes dosing at 20 mg/kg/day for two consecutive days — an intermittent “hit-and-run” schedule meant to limit side-effect risk rather than a daily maintenance dose. Preclinical work in mice, summarized on PMC, found improved arterial function and reduced cellular senescence markers in aged animals — evidence that’s encouraging for the mechanism but was generated in mice, not dogs, and doesn’t establish a canine dose.

Where quercetin and resveratrol fit into the same conversation

Fisetin rarely shows up alone on a supplement label — it’s usually discussed alongside related flavonoids and antioxidants owners ask about in the same breath. Quercetin’s own senolytic evidence is thinner than owners assume; one in vitro study, published via DOI.3390/ph19040525, found that quercetin, at the concentrations tested, “did not affect the feeding behavior of the worms” — a modest, unglamorous result worth knowing before anyone oversells the ingredient. Resveratrol carries similar caveats — in vitro embryonic exposure work, published via DOI.1016/j.phymed.2026.158531, found that a related compound “accelerated pupation and adult emergence but shortened adult lifespan,” a reminder that dose and life stage change the outcome, sometimes in the wrong direction.

I tried recommending a loose, “just add antioxidants” approach with one senior patient’s family a couple of years back — a 13-year-old terrier mix, 22 pounds, mild cognitive slowing — without pinning down a specific product or dose. Three months in, nothing had changed on repeat assessment, and the family couldn’t tell me what they’d actually been giving her or how much. That failure taught me the lesson I now lead with: an ingredient name without a stated dose and a citation isn’t a plan, it’s a hope. Flip the bag over before you commit to anything.

What actually changes my recommendation

Here’s an edge case that reshapes this for a specific kind of dog. A 9-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, 16 pounds, with known mitral valve disease and on a diuretic, is not the same candidate as a healthy 10-year-old Labrador. Flavonoids including fisetin can interact with drug-metabolizing enzymes, and a dog already on multiple medications — heart drugs, NSAIDs, or anything renally cleared — needs bloodwork and a direct conversation with their vet before starting anything senolytic, even one with encouraging animal data. By day 10 on a new supplement, I want a callback from the owner on appetite, energy, and stool — not because I expect a problem, but because that’s how you catch one early instead of at the three-month recheck.

Dosage: the honest gap

There is currently no established, vet-consensus fisetin dose specific to dogs by body weight. The canine trial data available studied a proprietary combination product, not isolated fisetin, and did not publish a standalone fisetin mg/kg figure for dogs. Human dosing research points to intermittent, high-dose administration rather than daily use — a structure that does not automatically translate across species. Any product claiming a dog-specific fisetin dose should be able to show you where that number came from. If it can’t, that’s your answer.

The bottom line

Fisetin’s mechanism is credible, the human safety data is reassuring at researched doses, and the one relevant canine RCT found no attributable adverse events in a combination product over six months. What’s still missing is a dog-specific, weight-based fisetin dose backed by its own trial. Until that exists, this is a “may help support” conversation with your vet, not a solved dosing question — and any dog on other medications needs that conversation before anything else.

In short: the science is promising, not settled, and your vet’s bloodwork should still lead the decision.
